Gianluigi Buffon has warned his Paris Saint-Germain teammates to be wary of Manchester United ahead of the second-leg of their Champions League encounter next month. Solskjaer’s hopes were hampered by first-half injuries to Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial but PSG made light of the absence of injured Brazilian superstar Neymar and striker Edinson Cavani. Former Manchester United misfit Angel di Maria was their tormentor, his 53rd minute corner allowing Kimpembe, arguably fortunate to still be on the pitch, to escape the attentions of Nemanja Matic and sidefoot past David de Gea.

Solskjaer has done a remarkable job in transforming the mood and performances since succeeding the sacked Jose Mourinho in December – but this was his toughest night since he arrived back at Old Trafford. It was no reflection on Solskjaer that United lost; they were simply the victims of a better team that still possessed an outstanding attack in the shape of Di Maria and Mbappe, even in the absence of Neymar and Cavani.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will need to score at least two away goals in the second-leg if they are to have any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and will have to do so without Paul Pogba. The World Cup winner was sent off late in the match for a second bookable offence after a late challenge on Dani Alves, but despite his absence Buffon has warned his side against complacency.

Taking to social media after the away win, the Italian legend told his PSG teammates to remain focused ahead of the return fixture in the first week of March. “A great win earned as a team on a very difficult field,” Buffon posted on his personal Instagram account. “Let’s not lose our focus, though: on March 6 Man Utd will come to Paris trying to overturn the result. We have to be ready!”
