Manchester United could make a bid to sign £25m-rated Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn before the January transfer window closes – on caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s instructions. The Mirror say United scouted the 21-year-old earlier this season and are now prepared to make an offer for the PSV Eindhoven player.
Bergwijn, 20, has long been regarded as one of the finest young talents in all of Dutch football. The wide-man came up through the youth ranks at PSV, before breaking into the club’s first-team setup at the tender age of 16 during the 2014/15 campaign.
Bergwijn, who has three senior caps for Holland, has previously said all the right things when asked about a move away from PSV, saying: “I am not concerned with big clubs or with rumours about interest. “I have remained with PSV this summer because I want to continue the line here to the end of the season.”
And Bergwign has since gone on to establish himself as a regular for the Dutch powerhouse over the seasons since. The gifted youngster racked up 8 goals and 11 assists in 32 league appearances last season, playing a key role in the club regaining the Eredivisie title.
Bergwijn, who can play on either wing, combines seering pace and superb dribbling abilities with a penchant for the spectacular, with the starlet’s effortless gift for beating defenders in one-on-one situations having dazzled the PSV faithful for several seasons now.
As such, the interest of a number of European heavyweights in the PSV starlet’s services has come as no surprise. Last summer saw all of Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham named as admirers of Bergwijn’s talents by Dutch outlet De Telegraaf.
And, as per the aforementioned update from the Mirror this morning, a fourth Premier League club have since added their name to the explosive winger’s growing list of suitors. The outfit in question are Manchester United.
The Red Devils have been linked with a whole host of wingers since the opening of the January transfer window, with Yannick Carrasco and Douglas Costa both reportedly being tracked. But Bergwijn, with his rumoured £25 million price-tag, is viewed as a more realistic target for this month.
United are even said to have had scouts present at a number of PSV fixtures this season to watch Bergwijn in action. And, having been sufficiently impressed, the Premier League giants are now ready to ‘test PSV’s resolve’ with an opening bid.
