Mesut Ozil returned to Arsenal’s matchday squad for the crunch London derby against Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday but was left as an unused substitute by manager Unai Emery. The Arsenal boss instead went with Aaron Ramsey in the front three of the starting line-up alongside Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
When Ramsey was taken off, Ozil was not called upon as Ainsley Maitland-Niles replaced the Welsh midfielder who is heading out of the club to join Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus at the end of the season. Super Eagles star, Alex Iwobi, also came in for Lacazette, who scored Arsenal’s opening goal in the 14th minute to set the tone of the match in favour of the Gunners.
With one more substitution available, Arsenal right back Hector Bellerin picked up an injury after falling awkwardly while challenging for possession, forcing Emery to bring on Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Elneny in his place while he sweats on the fitness of the Spanish defender ahead of Friday’s FA Cup fourth round showdown against Manchester United.
