Manchester United prepare to sign £25m winger

Manchester United are planning a move for Steven Bergwijn after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer specifically asked for the PSV Eindhoven winger, reports claim.United are riding the crest of a wave started by Solskjaer’s appointment as Jose Mourinho’s successor on an interim basis. The five Premier League wins they have recorded under the Norwegian have reignited hopes of securing a top-four finish. It seems Solskjaer has the man in mind who can help Manchester United secure Champions League qualification once again.And Old Trafford chiefs are said to be willing to grant the 45-year-old’s request before the end of the January transfer window.

According to Tutto Mercato Web, Solskjaer has told United he wants them to secure Bergwijn’s services. And, with a strong end to the season in their sights, Ed Woodward and co. are prepared to sanction a deal. United are apparently happy to stump up £25m (€28m) for Bergwijn, who has scored nine goals and provided eight assists this term.

And that would put the 21-year-old at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s disposal as United seek to build on a run of six wins on the spin in all competitions. Bergwijn would have to vie with the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez for a place in United’s attack.

But he might relish the prospect of following in the footsteps of countryman Ruud van Nistelrooy, who thrived after joining United from PSV. United look set to battle it out with Arsenal and Chelsea for a place among the Premier League’s top four. Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley says United could do with the Blues not signing a striker this month in order to boost their own chances.
