Just in: See why Man United want to extend this player’s stay at Old Trafford

Manchester United are set to hold talks with Juan Mata in a bid to extend his Old Trafford stay. The Spanish winger is out of contract in the summer and free to talk to clubs in Europe this month.  He was set to leave at the end of the season, but new Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a big fan of his.

And Mata’s agent and dad, Juan Sr, is expected to fly over in the next 48 hours in a bid to save his Old Trafford career. It is understood United will look to give Mata another one-year contract, but try and reduce his £170,000-a-week wages. The report comes as Mata was snapped arriving for training at Carrington this morning.

A club source said: “His agent is expected to come over with his future still very much up in the air. Mata has made no secret he wants to stay here. The club have dragged their heels over the extension though. The goalposts have been moved in recent days. The new boss is a huge fan of his and thinks he has more to offer. The wages might be an issue and he might have to take a reduction but the news is positive all round.”

Mata was joined by the entire United squad for training today as Solskjaer prepares them to face Brighton and get him his seventh win in seven games.
