SAD! Why Man City heroics will not be enough to save David Luiz’s Chelsea career

Brazilian defender, David Luiz, rose highest to head in Chelsea’s late winner against Manchester City on Saturday night to seal a morale-boosting 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge and end the unbeaten start to the Premier League season by Pep Guardiola’s side. However, David Luiz could still end up being axed by the Blues at the end of the season and here is why.

Chelsea have a long-standing policy of only offering players over the age of 30 one-year extensions and that could force David Luiz out of Stamford Bridge. This is despite the player and manager, Maurizio Sarri, both wanting the Brazil international to remain. Luiz will be out of contract next summer which means he is able to negotiate with clubs from abroad in January.

David Luiz and Sarri have both stated publicly they want him to stay beyond this season but Chelsea’s hierarchy have reaffirmed their position when it comes to only offering one-year deals to players over 30, leaving the door open for clubs to lure the ex-PSG and Benfica man away by offering a longer contract. “I am just trying to enjoy myself, like I do every single day,” said David Luiz when asked about the uncertainty over his future. “Then, for sure, we will do the best thing for me, for Chelsea, for everybody. We are still talking, let’s see. Let’s see what the future brings. I love this club, everybody knows I want to stay.”

Should he end up leaving as a result, it would be the second time that David Luiz would be quitting the London club, having previously done so in 2014 to join Paris Saint-Germain where he spent two seasons before rejoining Chelsea in 2016 for a reported fee of £34 million, £16 million less than the £50 million Chelsea received from PSG for his services.

What do you think, should Chelsea give David Luiz a contract extension or bring their relationship to an end?
