Two of the biggest brands in the word, Adidas Originals and Manchester United are celebrating 140 years since the foundation of the club by launching a new limited edition Newton Heath shoe.
With only 1,200 pairs made, the shoes will be available while stocks last in the Manchester United Megastore, online at United Direct and adidas.com from today, Friday 7 December.
The limited edition cargo-green shoe has a printed map of Newton Heath in each sole, showing the old location of the ground where the original team played back in 1878, as well as the date and devil icon embroidered on the heel. Gold embroidery of the name Newton Heath completes the shoe.
The club was originally formed in 1878 by the Carriage and Waggon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath, and initially played games against other departments and rail companies at their home ground at North Road, Manchester.
During our time at North Road, the newly formed club participated in the Football Alliance, before expanding the capacity to 12,000 with the hope of joining the English Football League.
Newton Heath entered the English First Division – the highest league in the country at the time – in 1892, before changing its name to the now world-renowned Manchester United in 1902, and moving to the iconic stadium of Old Trafford in 1910.
The Newton Heath shoe is adidas’ latest innovative way to celebrate our unique history following the current home shirt, which includes a railway graphic paying homage to the origins of the club, our away shirt celebrating the former Football Pink newspaper by the Manchester Evening News and, of course, our third kit which remembers our European Cup success in 1968. Last year, adidas released the Ninety Two trainer, which celebrated 25 years since the famous ‘Class of 92’.
