Alvaro Morata’s woeful form in front of goal for Chelsea continued in the Europa League on Thursday despite a comfortable 1-0 win against PAOK to kickstart their Europa League campaign. Willian’s early strike gave the Blues the lead after good work from Jorginho and Ross Barkley but Maurizio Sarri’s side failed to put the game to bed, wasting several chances with Morata the main culprit.
The forward was lively for the visitors, but his bad luck in front of goal continues. He might have had a first-half hat-trick, but looks short on confidence. Despite having seven shots, he failed to hit the target once and he was hauled off by Sarri with 10 minutes to go. Clearly unhappy with being brought off, Morata shrugged his manager off who attempted to congratulate him for his performance on the sideline. This reaction may well spell the end of his stay in Sarri’s starting lineup with Olivier Giroud waiting in the wings and doing better when ever he comes on.
The Spanish striker has completed 90 minutes just once this season, scoring once in five matches. When things are not going your way, the ball will just not go in. That must be how Morata is feeling at the moment. His reaction after being taken off may have just ruined his chances in the first team.
