Champions League hopeful, Buffon reveals sensitive discussion with PSG teenager Kylian Mbappe

This season’s Champions League looks more open than in recent years. Real Madrid have dominated the competition for three years in a row and they will be looking to win their 14th title in their own city. But after both Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo both left the club this summer, winning their fourth European Cup in a row could be very difficult indeed.

There’s a chance the trophy could head to England for the first time since 2012 with both Manchester City and Liverpool having a good chance of going all the way. Barcelona will be looking to improve on their last three Champions League campaigns – where they’ve been eliminated at the quarter-final stage. Meanwhile, Juventus – with Ronaldo in their ranks – will hope to win their first Champions League since 1996.

Then there’s Paris Saint-Germain.

With Neymar and Kylian Mbappe leading their line, you simply can’t rule out the French side from winning their first ever Champions League. And that’s why Gianluigi Buffon left Juventus for PSG – because he believed he stood a better chance of realising his dream of finally winning the Champions League. To do so, the 40-year-old will be hoping a player half his age can produce moments of magic.

Mbappe announced himself on the world stage this summer at the World Cup and the young striker still can’t believe he’s playing alongside the legendary goalkeeper, it seems.Buffon and Mbappe are now teammates at PSG

Buffon has revealed the conversation he ‘always’ has with Mbappe – and the Frenchman’s amazement at playing with him. “With Mbappé we joke and often laugh together, he always tells me: ‘Never in my life could I have imagined playing with you one day,” Buffon revealed. “He saw me play the 2006 World Cup against France, when he was a boy. I faced him in the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2017.”

As Buffon was winning the World Cup 12 years ago, Mbappe hadn’t even turned eight-years-old. As a young kid watching that final, he certainly didn’t think he’d be playing with the heroic ‘keeper one day. Mbappe probably didn’t want to play with Buffon after he helped Italy beat his country in that final. But now they’re teammates and they will both be looking to win the Champions League together.
