Then there’s Paris Saint-Germain.
With Neymar and Kylian Mbappe leading their line, you simply can’t rule out the French side from winning their first ever Champions League. And that’s why Gianluigi Buffon left Juventus for PSG – because he believed he stood a better chance of realising his dream of finally winning the Champions League. To do so, the 40-year-old will be hoping a player half his age can produce moments of magic.
Mbappe announced himself on the world stage this summer at the World Cup and the young striker still can’t believe he’s playing alongside the legendary goalkeeper, it seems.
Buffon has revealed the conversation he ‘always’ has with Mbappe – and the Frenchman’s amazement at playing with him. “With Mbappé we joke and often laugh together, he always tells me: ‘Never in my life could I have imagined playing with you one day,” Buffon revealed. “He saw me play the 2006 World Cup against France, when he was a boy. I faced him in the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2017.”
As Buffon was winning the World Cup 12 years ago, Mbappe hadn’t even turned eight-years-old. As a young kid watching that final, he certainly didn’t think he’d be playing with the heroic ‘keeper one day. Mbappe probably didn’t want to play with Buffon after he helped Italy beat his country in that final. But now they’re teammates and they will both be looking to win the Champions League together.
