Tottenham’s Son two wins away from military exemption

Tottenham Hotspur’s winger Heung-min Son is two wins away from avoiding military service as South Korea reach Asian Games semi-finals. Failure to win the Asian Games would require Son to undergo two years of military service.

Under Korean law, all men must do 21 months of National Service before they turn 28. South Korea are the defending champions of the tournament, having beat North Korea in the final four years ago. Son’s former side Bayer Leverkusen refused to let the forward participate in the 2014 Asian Games in UAE.

Son was allowed to compete in the tournament by Spurs as he hopes to secure the victory needed to avoid national service.

Under Korean law, all men must do 21 months of National Service before their 28th birthday. Son, 26, is able to earn an exemption by the South Korean Army if he wins either this year’s Asian Games or the 2019 Asian Cup.

South Korea will next face Syria or Vietnam in the semi-final on Wednesday.
