2019 AFCON: Meet the new faces in Super Eagles squad

Super Eagles continue their task of redeeming themselves after an awful performance in their first AFCON qualifiers game against South Africa in which they lost 0-2.

Ahead of their clash against Seychelles, Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has released the squad list for the encounter.

Gernot Rohr kept most of the players that represented Nigeria at the FIFA world cup in Russia but added four new faces to squad.

Meet the freshers in the Super Eagles:

Jamilu Colllins (SC Paderborn, Germany):

Born in Kaduna, Collins spent his youth years with Abuja Football College Academy. He was one of several players who moved from Abuja to the HNK Rijeka youth team in mid-2012. In October 2012, Collins signed his first professional contract with HNK Rijeka.

In August 2013, he was loaned to NK Pomorac in Druga HNL, where he collected 29 caps. In the following season, he played for HNK Rijeka’s reserve side in Croatia’s Treća HNL, where he was capped on 24 occasions. In May 2015, he signed a new one-year contract with the club, with an option to extend it for an additional year.

In June 2015, Rijeka sent Collins on loan to NK Krka in the Slovenian PrvaLiga, where he made 13 appearances before returning to Rijeka in January 2016. The following month, Collins was loaned to HNK Šibenik in Druga HNL, where he was a regular starter. Following return from the loan, Rijeka extended Collins’ contract until June 2017. He was immediately loaned to fellow Prva HNL club NK Istra 1961

On 6 September 2017, free agent Collins joined 3. Liga side SC Paderborn 07 on a two-year contract following trials at the club.

He has not represented Nigeria at any level.


Semiu Ajayi (Rotherham United, England):

Oluwasemilogo Adesewo Ibidapo Ajayi (born 9 November 1993), known as Semi Ajayi, is a professional footballer who plays as a defender for Championship club Rotherham United. He has also represented Nigeria at under-20 level. He possesses a British passport as well, and is eligible to represent England internationally, also.

Born to Nigerian parents, Ajayi began his football career as a youth product of the Charlton Athletic academy.

At the end of May 2013, Ajayi was called up to the Nigeria U20 squad for their 2013 Toulon Tournament matches.

After being an unused substitute on Matchday 1 against Mexico U20, Ajayi made his Nigeria U20 debut on 4 June 2013, in a 1–1 draw against Belgium U21.Ajayi went on to make two further appearances in the tournament against Portugal and Brazil. After the tournament ended, Ajayi commented that he was proud to play for the national side.


Kelechi Nwakali (FC Porto B, Portugal):

Kelechi Nwakali (born 5 June 1998) is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for FC Porto B on loan from Premier League side Arsenal.

Most of us are familiar with Nwakali brothers when they torn apart the Atletico Madrid in a friendly game.

Samuel Kalu (Bordeaux, France):

Samuel Kalu (born 26 August 1997) is a Nigerian footballer who plays as winger for French club Bordeaux.

On 9 December 2015, Kalu signed a two-year contract for the Slovak side AS Trenčín. Kalu made his professional debut for AS Trenčín against ŠK Slovan Bratislava on 27 February 2016.

On January 4, 2017 he joined Belgium top division club KAA Gent from AS Trencin.

On 6 August 2018, Kalu signed for Ligue 1 side Bordeaux, signing a five-year contract.

With Victor Moses’ retirement from the Super Eagles, the 20-year-old is now set to step into the breach.
