One mistake APC made in Edo that was repeated in the Anambra governorship election

Winning an election anywhere in the world takes careful consideration and planning. A candidate who hopes to win an election must select the best personnel to head his campaign team so as to beat every strategy the opposition can use to demarket him to the electorates.

In the just concluded governorship election in Anambra State, there was one mistake the All Progressive Congress (APC) made in the 2020 Edo governorship election which was also repeated in Anambra. The mistake was:

the choices of Governors they selected to lead the campaign council of their governorship candidates were exploited by their rivals.

How do I mean?

Prior to the Edo election, the Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje was picked by the APC leadership to lead the campaign council of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the APC’s governorship candidate.

Before his appointment, Ganduje had a huge reputation issue among the public after a video of him allegedly collecting dollars from a contractor went viral.

Even though he denied the allegation of bribery leveled against him and claimed the video was doctored, the PDP exploited this to further demarket the APC and its governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. You will recall that that video was played on a major billboard in Benin shortly after Ganduje was named to head Ize-Iyamu’s campaign team. And at the end of the election, the strategy worked as the PDP defeated APC convincingly.

Also in Anambra, Imo state Governor, Hope Uzodinma was charged with the responsibility of leading Senator Andy Uba’s campaign council. The Imo Governor who came into office after the Supreme Court ruled in his favor also has a huge reputation issue in the Southeast. Many Southeasterners have struggled to accept the judgment of the Supreme Court which brought Uzodinma to power. Consequently, he has been struggling to get the acceptance of the Igbo people.

You will recall that the APGA governorship candidate, Chukwuma Soludo, declared that Anambra was not Imo after Uzodinma was chosen to lead Andy Uba’s campaign in the Anambra, a clear reference to Uzodinma’s supreme court victory.

Though other factors contributed to APC’s defeat in Anambra, I believe the choice of the Imo Governor to lead APC’s campaign council in Anambra may have also played a role.
