There may be second lockdown, PTF warns

The Presidential Task Force (PFT) on COVID-19 has warned Nigerians against a second lockdown in Nigeria.

The Chairman of PTF, Boss Mustapha, made the call at a briefing in Abuja.

Mustapha, who is also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said this can be done by complying with the protocols released by the government.

According to him: “Let me remind you that the pandemic is raging and all tiers of Government and citizens must keep their hands-on-deck.

“We are in a difficult situation in which a balance must continue to be struck between lives and livelihood.

“We are considering all options while hoping that broad cooperation will be received.

“We must do everything possible to avoid a second lockdown in Nigeria.”

Assistant Commissioner Of Police Bags Life Imprisonment For Buying Vehicle From Kidnappers

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, has sentenced an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Okubo Aboye, to life imprisonment for buying stolen vehicle from kidnappers in the state.

The court on Monday also sentenced seven other persons, Solomon Ayodele Obamoyegun (39), Femi Omiawe (40), Damilola Obamoyegun (20), Bose Sade Ajayi (30), George Lucky (35), Chukwuma Nnamani (22) and Sunday Ogunleye (45) to five years imprisonment each without an option of fine for kidnapping.

In their testimony, the investigating police officers said the car was tracked down to the compound of ACP Okubo who on interrogation confessed that he bought the vehicle from his mechanic who received it from the kidnappers.

The prosecutor, Felix Awoniyi, revealed that “the offence runs contrary to sections 346(2), 1(2)a, and Section 5 of the Criminal Code Cap C16 laws of Ekiti State, 2012 and Robbery and Firearms Special Provisions Act, Cap R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”

In his judgement, Justice John Adeyeye found the ACP guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment accordingly.

“I found you guilty of receiving stolen vehicle. All evidence pointed to the fact that you were aware that the car was stolen. You are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment for the offence,” he said.

To prove the kidnapping case, the prosecutor called seven witnesses while exhibits tendered included statements of the accused persons and bond to release the vehicle to the owner.

Gunmen kill Inspector in Port Harcourt, Police confirm

POLICE in Rivers State have confirmed one Inspector dead and other nursing gunshot wounds after gunmen attacked a police team at Amangala Bustop, Borikiri, Port Harcourt, Sunday night. An eye witness in the neighbourhood, however, claimed two policemen and a civilian hit by the assailant’s stray bullets died in the ordeal. Rivers Police Spokesman, SP Nnamdi Omoni confirmed,

“The unfortunate and mindless attack last night on our Personnel from Borikiri Division, posted on a Pin-Down Point at Capt Amangala Junction, Borikiri Port Harcourt. “While on duty unknown gunmen numbering about Seventeen (17) launched a surprise attack on them, leading to the death of an Inspector of Police, while others sustained gunshot wounds.

“The Police Patrol Vehicle belonging to the Team was riddled with bullets. The Corpse of the late Inspector has been evacuated and deposited in Mortuary for Autopsy. “Meantime, the Commissioner of Police (CP Joseph Mukan) has ordered a serious manhunt for the perpetrators with marching orders to all Tactical Units to identify and apprehend them without delay. The Area is under close monitoring.”

The eye witness who spoke on anonymity narrated, “The gunmen stormed the place and shot sporadically at the officers on duty leading to the death of two of them while another civilian was hit by a stray bullet from the assassins’ guns. “We don’t know where exactly they came from but all we heard was gunshots and we all ran inside. By the time it subsided, we came out to see two officers and one civilian dead. Right now, we are even afraid because we don’t know if police will come for arrest in the night”

Buhari, Osinbajo To Spend N3.4bn on Feeding, Traveling In 2021

President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will spend N3.4 billion on feeding and travel expenses in 2021.
Naija News gathered that President Buhari approved about N2.6 billion of the amount for his office, and about N873 million was earmarked for Osinbajo’s office.

This newspaper understands that in the last five years, travel expenses have taken the largest chunk of these expenses.

The same amount was approved for the offices of the first two citizens of the country in 2020. Both offices received less but still significantly high allocations in the four preceding years.

Travels and feeding gulped N1.5 billion in 2019; N1.52 billion in 2018; in 2017, N1.45 billion; and N1.43 billion in 2016. Presidential travels will gulp N2.4 billion: N775.6 million for local trips and N1.7 billion for international journeys.

On the other hand, Osinbajo will spend N801 million on his travels for the year – N284 million locally and N517.1 million outside the shores of the country.

Meanwhile, the meal bill for the offices of President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo has been pegged at N195.5 million. The first family will spend N124 million.
