Fresh reports coming in indicate that the police have sealed up the venue for a programme which was being put together by Coalition of Revolution (CORE), organisers of the RevolutionNow protests which shook the country on August 5, 2019.
In its report of the incident, Sahara Reporters said that the organizers are accusing policemen of carrying out arrests of innocent bystanders in a bid to stop the event from holding in anyway possible.
The event titled, ‘Democracy, State Repression and the State of Insecurity in Nigeria’ which was slated to begin at 11:00 am on Monday, August 19, 2019, at 46 Ibijoke Street, Oregun, Ikeja, had notable Nigerians such as Wole Soyinka, Femi Falana and Seun Kuti penciled as participants.
The new development was confirmed by Mr. Femi Adeyeye, the right hand man to Omoyele Sowore, convener of the RevolutionNow protests via a post on his WhatsApp status.
He further queried if it was a crime for people to assemble in the country, either in halls or in the public to discuss the state of the nation. He called for explanations even as he said the country was a joke, due to this development.
He then said it was a shame on the part of the Nigerian Government to seal up the venue of the symposium, while saying it was a bigger shame on Nigerians for refusing to speak up, instead choosing to remain docile.
One of the organisers of the event, who spoke to Sahara Reporters, stated that it was time to take a firm stand against tyranny, as the current situation in the country conforms that the foundation of the society was at risk.
