PDP Explains Why It Made Lawan U-Turn To Endorse Ndume And Bago, As APC Governors Storm NASS

THE PUNCH have reported that The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has released a statement giving explanations on why it has decided to give its support to Senator Ali Ndume and Hon. Umar Bago both of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as its candidates for the positions of the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, respectively.

The elections for both positions as well as that of their deputies are holding at the National Assembly, Tuesday, June 11, 2019.

The opposition party had on Tuesday, stated that it had taken this decision so that the sanctity of the legislature can be protected.

The statement which was signed by Senator Umaru Ibrahim Tsauri, who is the National Secretary of the PDP, revealed that the party arrived at this conclusion after the meeting of the party with Governors and lawmakers under the fold of the party.

He said, “After very extensive consultations with critical stakeholders resolve to support Senator Ali Ndume and Hon. Umar Mohammed Bago for Senate President and Speaker of House of Representatives respectively, ahead of National Assembly inauguration on Tuesday.

“The final resolution on Senator Ndume and Hon. Bago was reached at the end of a decisive meeting of members of the National Working Committee, party leaders, state governors as well as senators and members-elect on the platform of the PDP.

“This decision is in the best interest of the nation, in line with our party’s determination to deepen democracy, ensure a strong and independent legislature, strict compliance to the principle of separation of powers as well as constitutional checks and balances in the polity.

“All senators and members-elect on the platform of the PDP are to be guided accordingly.”

Recall that some sections of the media had earlier reported that the PDP had endorsed Senator Lawan to serve as the Senate President while Ekweremadu would be posited as the Deputy Senate President.

But this new official statement has, however, shattered the dynamics of things.

Meanwhile, the Governors of the APC have stormed the National Assembly to witness how the presiding officers of the Legislative arm of government will be voted in.

Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, was the leader of the group.
