The Former Senate president Bukola Saraki has refused his severance allowance and has revealed what the National Assembly should do with it. He has asked the allowance to be given to Leah Sharibu’s family among others.

The severance package which amounts to N7.5 million has been divided into four parts. The message was passed along in a statement by Saraki’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Yusuph Olaniyonu.

According to his statement 20 percent of the severance allowance has been put aside to be donated to the family of Leah Sharibu. The other 20 percent will be paid to the family of Hauwa Liman. Hauwa is an aid worker who had been captured by the insurgents Boko Haram and was later murdered in quite a brutal manner.

Donations will subsequently move to the family of the second aid worker, Hussaini Ahmed Khoisan, who was also murdered in the same circumstance. The 40 percent that is left will be given to the children of the dead members of the outgoing Eight Senate who are going through financial challenges.

Saraki had revealed the reason behind taking this decision to use his severance package to support victims of the Boko Haram insurgency, he had said that their issues represent one of the most critical and very touching humanitarian issues which had been of the utmost concern at the plenary during the four years of the Eight Senate.

He had consequently made the National Assembly Management to assist the children of the deceased by setting up a Trust Fund that would later take care of all their needs.

The statement reads in part

“It is my hope that this TRUST FUND should grow with more contributions from my dear colleagues, present, past and future, who may be moved to put in additional money into it.

“The Clerk of the National Assembly will immediately get an official letter from me mandating him to act as stated above on the disbursement of my Severance Allowance.”
