After working in an acting capacity for over five months, the acting Inspector General of Police Muhammad Adamu was finally confirmed as the substantive Inspector General of Police by the police council. Mohammed Adamu’s confirmation comes after his appointment in an acting capacity on January 15th, when he took over from the former IGP Ibrahim Edris. His confirmation was announced at the police council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, May 23rd,2029. Muhammad Adamu is now Nigeria’s 20th Inspector General of Police.
The chairman of Nigeria’s Governor Forum Dr. John Kayode Fayemi spoke to the press on behalf of the police council. In his words, “ the council looked at the record of the acting Inspector General of Police Mr. Muhammad Adamu, who has been in the saddle since 15th January 2019. A cross section of members of the council was very clear that giving his passion, commitment, and professionalism, and his extensive experience locally and internationally. His interim appointment as acting Inspector General of Police has was approved and confirmed a permanent appointment by the police council in accordance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“We also identified with the challenges and the enormity of the responsibilities that the Inspector General of Police would have to cope with, at a time that the challenges are a bit daunting. In our society, all across the country, we are dealing with banditry, and robbery, kidnapping and a host of challenges, but with the analysis and the quick response he has given so far. We know that as an individual and as a leader of the force, he is more than qualified and all members of council attest to this.”
The newly appointed Inspector General of Police after his appointment and the council meeting spoke to journalists outside the council chambers. He stressed that there is no need for a state of emergency on insecurity. In the words of the IGP,” What it means for us is that we have been given a tough task to make sure that we provide security within the country and make the country crime-free, which means we have to double our efforts. Whatever strategy we put in, we have to look at it and re-strategise, day in, day out, to make sure that the insecurity in the country is brought down to the nearest minimum. The security agencies in the country are capable of dealing with the situation. There is no need for a call for a state of emergency. What we are required to do is to re-strategise and face the criminals squarely.”
