ELECTION! Election materials distribution gets delayed in Delta Community as Okowa battles Ogboru at the polls today

The Electoral Officer in charge of Warri South Local Government Area in Delta State, Mrs Grace Okah, has just disclosed that only two wards are yet to get electoral materials as of 8:10 a. m.

As of the time THE PUNCH correspondents visited the INEC office along Esisi Road, materials were seen being moved to various polling units in the LGA.

Okah said distribution of materials started since Friday night to riverine communities in the council and the exercise has been peaceful and orderly.

She said the wards left to be distributed are Warri wards 11 and 12.

She added that officials have started sorting out the materials for the wards.

However, security has been beefed up around major flashpoints in Delta state.

THE PUNCH correspondent reports that more security operatives have also been deployed in the riverine areas including the creeks of Warri South-West , Burutu , Bomadi and Warri-North local government areas.

The correspondent observed on Friday patrols by military operatives around the oil city of Warrri, Effurun , Udu and Ughelli.

There was also heavy presence of policemen on stop -and-check duties along the Otor-Udu/ Otu -Jeremi road and along the DSC Expressway.

Some military trucks were sighted stationed at the Effurun Market along the PTI Road in Uvwie LGA near Warri .
At the INEC office in Warri , security operatives were also sighted , although activities had yet to commence at the centre.

The spokesperson for Gbaramatu Kingdom in the Warri South -West Council Area of the state , Chief Godspower Gbenekama, described the heavy presence of security agents in the area as unnecessary .

Gbenekama while querying the rationale behind the massive deployment of security men in the creeks , however, noted that there was electoral violence during and after the presidential election.

Meanwhile Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is contesting for re-election as a governor of the state under the Peoples Democratic Party¬† (PDP) with Great Ogboru of the All Progressives Congress¬† (APC) being one of his major opponentin today’s election.
