The Bayelsa State Police Command has dismissed Sergeant Timadi Emmanuel, who allegedly shot and killed 20-year-old Tariela Nikadae, an undergraduate of petrochemical engineering at the Niger Delta University, Yenagoa.
Sergeant Emmanuel, attached to a patrol team in Akenfa Division, on November 23 allegedly killed the student while on patrol on Tenacious Road, Edepie, Yenagoa.
Bayelsa police spokesman Asinim Butswat on Wednesday said that the policeman would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.
“The Bayelsa Police Command regrets the unfortunate incident involving a police officer and a resident of Tenacious Road, Edepie, Yenagoa.
“The policeman has been dismissed after preliminary investigations into the incident as he would be prosecuted as soon as investigations were concluded,” Mr Butswat said.
Residents of Tenacious Road have alleged harassment, violent assault and indiscriminate arrests of innocent members of the public by policemen in the area.
“They never cared to listen to any explanations. I told them that I am a teacher and they could verify my claim from my neighbours but they took me and others and locked up,” one man was reported to have said.
The Bayelsa Government had claimed in a statement by information commissioner Daniel Iworiso-Markson that the deployment of police commissioners to the state was being politicised.
