Romelu Lukaku is undergoing the first part of his Chelsea medical in Italy after the club agreed in principle a club-record deal worth £97.5m (€115m) to re-sign the striker from Inter Milan.

The medical is taking place in Milan, while the paperwork is now with club lawyers, and once that is formalised Lukaku is expected to sign a five-year contract.

Inter have previously rejected two offers from Chelsea for the Belgium international, the second of which was worth £85m (€100m) plus left-back Marcos Alonso.

Lukaku, 28, left Chelsea in 2014 after making just 15 appearances there following his arrival at Stamford Bridge from Anderlecht in 2011.

National Chairman Of Buhari’s APC Party, Governor Buni In Multi-billion Naira Asset Declaration Scandal

Governor Mai-Mala Buni of Yobe state is currently enmeshed in a multi-billion naira asset declaration scandal at the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), SaharaReporters has gathered. The Nigerian constitution and the CCB/Code of Conduct Tribunal Act make it mandatory for public officers and civil servants across the levels of government to periodically declare their assets.

SaharaReporters gathered that the scandal is being discussed in hush tones in the Yobe State Government House and National Secretariat of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Abuja. Buni has been chairing the caretaker committee of the ruling party since the sacking of Adams Oshiomole in June 2020.

Spirited efforts by the governor and his backers to cover up the scandal however failed last week when his pre-tenure form (form CC81), which was deposited at CCB on May 23, 2019, got leaked to President Muhammadu Buhari, the Department of State Security Services (DSS) and National Intelligence Agency, a source told SaharaReporters.

Buni, who was the National Secretary of the APC until his election as Yobe state governor in 2019, was involved in anticipatory declaration, a criminal offence under the CCB law.

“Though he has immunity but he committed offences contrary to Section 15 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, Cap C15 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 which are punishable under Section 23 (2) of the same Act,” a Government House source told SaharaReporters.

An analysis of the document submitted by the governor showed he declared having N2 billion as cash in six Nigerian banks.

Catholic Priest Murdered In France By Suspected Cathedral Arsonist

A Rwandan refugee suspected of causing a major fire that ravaged the cathedral in the French city of Nantes last year on Monday murdered a Catholic priest in western France, officials said.

The attack immediately sparked a new row between the far right and the government over immigration less than a year ahead of presidential elections where the issue is expected to loom large.

Father Olivier Maire, 60, was killed in the town of Saint-Laurent-sur-Sevre at the Montfortains religious community where he lived and where the suspect had also been given shelter.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin described the murder on Twitter as “tragic” and said he was heading to the scene.

A source close to the investigation, who asked not to be named, said a man had earlier gone to the police in the town of Mortagne-sur-Sevre and declared he had killed a priest. The man was already under judicial control over the fire at Nantes cathedral in July 2020, the source added.

The source added that the priest, aged 60, had been welcoming the man into his church for several months, said the source. His body was found in the religious community in which he lived and he appeared to have been killed by blows although an autopsy will now be carried out.

The man, named as Emmanuel A. has confessed to being behind the fire at the Nantes cathedral that horrified France.

He had initially been placed under arrest before being freed on judicial control. He had been undergoing treatment in a psychiatric hospital but had left the institution in late July.

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who accused the government of being weak on immigration, sought to seize on the incident, saying that in France “you can be an illegal migrant, set fire to a cathedral, not be expelled and then re-offend by murdering a priest”.

Darmanin immediately accused her of “making a polemic without knowing the facts,” saying the man could not be expelled from France so long as he was under judicial control.

Immigration is set to be a major issue when Le Pen challenges centrist President Emmanuel Macron for the presidency next year.
