Sunday Igboho Can Be Killed If Beninese Court Frees Him At This Time – Lawyer

Olusegun Falola, one of the nine lawyers to Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) has stated that the activist may be killed if the Beninese court decides to free him at this moment when there is still tension between the Nigerian government and its Benin Republic counterpart.

Falola noted that the resumption of Igboho’s trial might take two weeks or months in court, noting that only the judges could determine the next day of trial. The Doctor of Philosophy holder who teaches law in one of the Beninoise universities stated these in an interview with Nation on Thursday.

He said, “Though the laws of Benin Republic do not allow a person to be detained in police custody beyond one week, authorities in the Benin Republic believe that setting Igboho free at the time the matter was still generating a lot of heat in local and international circles might also expose him to danger.

“Igboho has not committed any offence here. He did not even stay here up to one day before he was arrested. He was arrested at the airport on his way out.

“Space and time were not enough to link him with any criminal issue here. This has made it difficult to say his mission here is to cause trouble or commit a crime. He was arrested because of political issues emanating from Nigeria.

“His continued incarceration here is to allow things to calm down and for peace to reign between Nigeria and Benin Republic. We have no criminal allegation against him in the Benin Republic.

“Anyone that insists that we should set Igboho free now only wants him killed. He can be killed, which may cause more problems.

“I have not seen him since Monday, but his wife is allowed to see him. I am processing for permission to see him. But I see his wife from time to time. We spoke about two hours ago. She said he is very safe where he is now. He was given medical attention immediately after he got to the prison.

“The new place is far better than the police cell because he will no longer be in handcuffs. He enjoys full protection and comfort where he is being kept. There is an instruction that he should not be made to feel like a prisoner or criminal. He is not a convict yet.

“About the next court appearance, we have not gone back to the court because that is not how we do it here. It takes some two weeks or months before we can do anything on the matter.

“As a matter of fact, it is the judges that can do something about the next court appearance.”

Why Nigeria must not hand Abba Kyari over to FBI- Dr. Gololo

Nigerian based security expert and Lawyer, Dr. Garus Gololo, has advised the Federal Government not to hand over the embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari to the American security agency for trial. DCP Kyari is currently standing trial in an American court, over an allegation of bribery, as revealed in the report of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) who is currently prosecuting a Nigerian suspect, Ramoni Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi for advance fee fraud.

FBI agents reportedly arrived in Nigeria and met heads of security agencies, ahead of the arrest and extradition of DCP Kyari to America, for the continuation of trial.

But Dr. Gololo, while interacting with newsmen in Abuja on Friday, said it would be totally wrong for the Nigerian government to release such a global class super Cop, who is an envy of the whole world.

He said, “The International Criminal Law allows any country to carry out an in-house investigation or trial of any suspected citizen of the nation, such as the allegation against Kyari since it is not an act of terrorism against a foreign country”.

Gololo wondered why the American court would order the extradition of DCP Kyari, who is the smartest and most proactive Cop Nigeria would never want to lose.

“Let Kyari be tried in Nigeria according to our own law. What they are accusing him of is not an act of terrorism or money laundering. They said he allegedly received bribes and I think that is the duty of ICPC to investigate and if it is found to be true, Kyari should be prosecuted and jailed according to our law.

“Nigeria is a sovereign state and we are not under any country’s law, we have our own law, we have our own court and the international criminal court also allows him to be tried in Nigeria, even if the offence was committed in America since it is not terrorism or money laundering. We are an independent nation.

“That is why you see that the Beninese government refused to extradite Sunday Igboho to Nigeria to be tried, even though he was declared wanted by Nigeria’s government”, he added.

Dr. Gololo advised the Nigerian government, to, however, do a proper investigation of the allegation and also make the process public to avoid sweeping facts under the carpets or crucifying Kyari unjustly.

Four footballers killed in Somalia blast

Four local footballers in Somalia were killed when a powerful explosion ripped through their bus on Friday in what the country’s president branded a “barbaric terrorist attack”.
Ten players from the Jubaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry club were heading off for a game at the Kismayo city stadium in southern Somalia when the blast hit.

“The players were riding in a bus when the explosion went off, presumably inside the vehicle. There are investigations going on but we presume the device was planted onto the bus,” said police officer Mohamed Sadiq.

He said four football players were killed and five others wounded in the explosion, believed to have been caused by a bomb.

In a statement on Twitter, Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed condemned the “barbaric terrorist attack that claimed the lives of innocent Somali sportspeople”.

Witness Ibrahim Ahmed said the blast was “huge” and set off a fire that gutted the bus.

“People rushed to remove the dead bodies and wounded players,” he said.

“I saw the burning bus and three dead bodies of the players — this was horrible because football players are not politicians,” added another witness, Said Adan.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast in Kismayo, capital of the southern state of Jubaland which borders Kenya.

Jubaland was the first state to start voting this week in long-delayed national elections in Somalia that the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab jihadist group has threatened to disrupt.

The extremists have been fighting to overthrow the federal government since 2007 and frequently attack the government, security, and civilian targets.
