Guardiola loses again as Wolves’ Adama Traore tears Man City apart

Adama Traore was the hero of the day as his second-half brace sealed a 2-0 victory for Wolves over Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s team has now gone a distant eight points behind leaders Liverpool as we head into the international break.

It’s a first Premier League start for Joao Cancelo at left-back as Pep Guardiola makes three changes from the win at Everton last Saturday. David Silva and Sergio Aguero replace Kevin De Bruyne, who is injured, and Gabriel Jesus.

Wolves make three changes from the win over Watford last weekend as Nuno Espirito Santo continues to rotate his squad with the addition of Europa League football to their schedule. In came Patrick Cutrone for his second Premier League start while Ruben Vinagre and Ruben Neves return to the starting XI.
Diego Jota is the only major absentee for Wolves – he’s out with a toe injury.

Man City had the first chance after five minutes when Moutinho flicks a ball through the heart of the City back four and Cutrone has a free run at goal. He’s only got Ederson to beat but never looks comfortable. He looks to open up his body but shanks an effort well wide. You can’t pass up these types of opportunities at the Etihad.

Wolves’ first clear chance came in the 20th minute after a loose pass in midfield sends Jimenez in behind. He hasn’t got the pace to get away but still fashions a strike on goal from 15 yards. Fernandinho makes a brave block but it drops to Cutrone on the edge who sends it back towards goal with force but the Brazilian – still on the ground – heads it away.

But the first half ended on a barren note with no goal.

City continued struggling to find their rhythm after the break. Wolves are doing a fine job of restricting space in midfield – even Sterling is losing possession easily and frustrations are growing.

Pep Guardiola’s patience started running out, and on the hour mark, Mahrez, who has been very quiet, is replaced by Bernardo Silva.

Gabriel Jesus, who replaces David Silva in the 73rd minute, sends a wonderful ball in behind for Cancelo who finds the killer final ball. Bernardo Silva meets it from eight yards but it strikes Aguero almost on the goalline and somehow deflects it to safety.

As the game entered it’s final ten minutes, Adama Traore broke the deadlock to give Wolves the lead.

Jimenez takes advantage of some sloppy play from Cancelo and drives down the left on a counter. He slips one across to Traore, who isn’t known for his finishing ability. But he slots it into the net from 18 yards.

Traore was not done yet, as he scored another goal in extra time, no thanks to a thorn City defense.

Jimenez accelerates away down the left and finds the makeshift striker with a fine pass. Once again, the usually unpredictable Traore stays cool as ice and finds the bottom corner.
