Salah sends strong message to Guardiola over Champions League comments

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has aimed a dig at former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola after the Manchester manager claimed that winning the Premier League title is the most important aim of every club each season. Salah, who represented the Pharaohs of Egypt declared that the Champions League is the trophy everyone wants to win.

Salah had a final to forget in 2018 when he picked up an injury in the first half when Liverpool clashed with Real Madrid in Kiev. However, he and his Liverpool team-mates fought hard to reach the final in 2019 and came out on top in Europe last season, winning the club’s sixth European Cup with victory over Tottenham in the final in Madrid.

Guardiola, on the other hand, helped his Manchester City side to a historic, unprecedented domestic treble in England as they won the Premier League, FA Cup, and the League Cup in the previous season. However, they came up short in the Champions League as City were knocked out by Spurs in the quarter-finals.

Guardiola has come under a lot of criticism for his recent history in the Champions League. Although the former Barcelona man won the trophy twice in three years at the Nou Camp, he has not won the continent’s biggest prize since 2011 and his City side has not made it past the quarter-final stage since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium in 2016.

The Manchester City boss claimed that success domestically meant more than in Europe after he lost to Tottenham in the last eight of 2019, he said:  “The Champions League is seven games, you can win the Champions League but the league is every three days in the same month. I’m sorry but it’s much more important what these guys have done the whole season.”

However, Salah who scored the opener in June’s final at the Wanda Metropolitano from the penalty spot does not agree with the City boss. “Honestly, I didn’t know that he [Guardiola] said that, but I think if you give him a choice to choose which one, he would choose the Champions League,” Salah told CNN.

“That’s my opinion. I’m not talking about him, but my opinion. It’s the biggest competition in football, so everyone wants to win it. Every coach, every player wants to win it, dreams of winning it. So, of course, the Premier League also is something big, but still the Champions League is the biggest competition,” the Premier League two-time Golden Boot winner revealed.
