Arsenal have agreed on a deal to sign Chelsea defender David Luiz for a fee of around £8million potentially leaving Frank Lampard with more headaches as he would not be able to replace the defender due to the transfer ban imposed on the West London club by FIFA.
Chelsea are currently serving a two-window transfer ban and it was thought unlikely that the Blues would sanction Luiz’s departure, especially to a top-four rival but Frank Lampard is reportedly willing to let Luiz leave in order to send a message to the rest of the squad that he will allow no-nonsense regardless of his relative inexperience as a manager in the top flight.
Although the Brazilian defender refused to train on Tuesday, reports from the Chelsea camp claim that the Brazilian was banned from training with Chelsea’s first-team squad amid Lampard’s concerns that the Brazilian was becoming a disruptive influence in the dressing room.
The 32-year-old was one of the few senior Chelsea players to suggest to the board that former manager Maurizio Sarri be granted another season at Stamford Bridge after the current Juventus boss secured Champions League qualification via League position and led Chelsea to Europa League success.
Although the club sanctioned Sarri’s departure and appointed a less experienced Lampard, Luiz had spoken positively about the impact Lampard had made since his return to the club in a managerial capacity according to the Metro.
The defender had even featured in some pre-season games under Lampard’s management but the Daily Telegraph reports that relations between the pair have deteriorated rapidly.
While Chelsea were busy at the training ground preparing for the Premier League opener against Manchester United on Sunday, Luiz was asked to train away from the rest of Chelsea’s first-team stars with Lampard expected to select Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen at the heart of his defence.
The former PSG centre-half started last weekend’s friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach on the bench and this seemed to be the final straw that broke the camel’s back. Lampard’s decision to bench the Brazilian left him believing his first-team opportunities could be limited heading into the new campaign.
The Chelsea manager is reportedly happy to sanction the departure of his former teammate, despite being aware that he would be unable to sign a replacement given Chelsea’s two-window transfer ban. Luiz, on his part, wants to join London rivals Arsenal and his former manager Unai Emery.
His agent travelled to London on Wednesday night to broker a deal as soon as possible and Sky Sports reports that he has undergone a medical at the Emirates and the deal would be announced sooner rather than later. Arsenal boss, Emery has been desperate to strengthen his defence all summer and Laurent Koscielny’s move to Bordeaux on Tuesday increased the need to make a signing.
Although Lampard is not expected to stop the deal from happening, the final decision on Luiz’s future and destination is likely to lie with director Marina Granovskaia. Chelsea are said to be shocked by Luiz’s conduct, especially in light of him signing a new two-year deal as recently as May.
