Reigning African champions, Cameroon, and one of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title favourites, Senegal, begin their mission to win the tournament holding in Egypt from June 21 and will feature a number of players making their debut at the 32nd edition of the competition including Barcelona star, Moussa Wague.
DailyAdvent takes a look at him and the other players from the Teranga and Indomitable Lions whom African football fans should keep an eye out for in expectation of them making a great first impression at the tournament.
Wague
The Barcelona right back, who impressed at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia as the Teranga Lions dramatically missed out on qualification to the knock-out stages, was called up to the Senegal national team’s 23-man squad led by experienced stars such as Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly and Keita Balde.
Despite being only 20 years old, he has already established himself in the Senegal first team since making his debut in a 1-1 draw with Nigeria’s Super Eagles back in March 2017, going on to win 16 more caps including appearances in his country’s group stage matches at the 2018 World Cup where he became the youngest African goalscorer in the competition’s history in a 2-2 draw with Japan.
Diagne
The striker with an imposing stature goes into AFCON 2019 in excellent goalscoring form having scored 10 goals in 11 league matches for Galatasaray as the Turkish giants claimed the 2018/19 Super Lig title.
And since making his debut for Aliou Cisse’s side in September 2018 in an AFCON qualifying match, Diagne has made a big impression by scoring three goals in five matches for the national team as he looks set to lead the forward line in Egypt.
Onana
Andre Onana will be vying with his cousin, Fabrice Ondoa, for a place as Cameroon head coach Clarence Seedorf’s first-choice goalkeeper at AFCON 2019, a call that could give Seedorf some sleepless nights especially with Onana’s form this season.
The 23-year-old Ajax goalkeeper was instrumental in the Dutch giants’ run to claim the domestic double and reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-final after memorable wins over 13-time champions Real Madrid and a Juventus side led by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Onana featured in 55 matches for Ajax on the club’s way to winning the Dutch Eredivisie and KNVB Cup, earning himself a place in the 2018/19 Team of the Year having also been named Cameroonian footballer of the year and Best African Goalkeeper in 2018.
Bahoken
Tall and dangerous in front of goal, Bahoken heads to AFCON 2019 on the back of 11 goals in 32 league matches for Angers in the 2018/19 French top-flight campaign which saw him impress against some of the league’s big teams as he scored goals against Monaco, St. Etienne, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Olympique Marseille Rennes and OGC Nice.
He would provide great back-up for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting who would undoubtedly be the first-choice forward for the Cameroonians in their quest to retain the African title.
Anguissa
Fulham’s record signing after the London club paid French giants Olympique Marseille £20 million for his services, Andre Zambo Anguissa is a powerful defensive midfielder who would add steel to the Indomitable Lions team looking to win a sixth AFCON title.
