How Super Falcons got revenge over Ghana, set up tricky WAFU Cup final clash

It was sweet revenge for Nigeria’s Super Falcons after reaching the WAFU Cup final by overcoming Ghana’s Black Queens 4-2 on penalties following a goalless draw in the semi-final between the arch-rivals on Thursday evening in Ivory Coast.

With Ghana failing to capitalise on their early chances in the opening 15 minutes, Nigeria came alive and almost found an opener through Rafait Sule in the 33rd minute. Then in the second half, both teams missed several scoring chances as neither side failed to break the deadlock resulting in the game being decided by penalties.

The result allowed Nigeria gain revenge on their rivals who had emerged winners last time both countries met in the semi-final stage of the competition’s previous edition last year, with Ghana now failing in their quest to defend the WAFU Cup title.

Thomas Dennerby’s Super Falcons will now face host nation, Ivory Coast, in the final after the Ivorians secured a 2-1 win over Mali in the first semi-final between both countries thanks to goals from Ange Koko N’Guessan and Mariam Diakite.

As a result, the Ghanaians will face Mail in the third place playoff on Saturday before Nigeria face Ivory Coast later on Saturday in the final.

And Nigeria would be hoping to win as the competition serves as part of preparations for the FIFA Women’s World Cup holding next month in France.
