As the season draws to a close, the award nominations and presentations are starting to pop up. The latest has seen Chelsea star N’Golo Kante and two Madrid stars, Karim Benzema of Real and Atletico’s Antoine Griezmann in the running for the award of Best French Player abroad.
The union of professional footballers in France unveiled a total of five French football stars in contention for the accolade, with Manchester United midfield star, Paul Pogba, also listed for the title along with Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris.
Benzema has enjoyed a great 2018/19 campaign individually at the Santiago Bernabeu, scoring 21 goals in La Liga this season and has been arguably Real Madrid’s best performing player in what has been a disappointing spell for the club this season.
Despite his goals, Benzema’s heroics have been unable to prevent Real Madrid from crashing out of the Champions League as early as the round of 16, while also falling short in the Copa del Rey and being set to finish third in La Liga behind arch-rivals, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
Atletico’s Griezmann on his part has scored 21 goals in all competitions for his club this season which has seen Los Rojiblancos push Barca in the La Liga title race but falling short in the Champions League and Copa del Rey.
As for Kante, he has impressed for Chelsea despite being played out of position all through the season by club boss, Maurizio Sarri.
The 28-year-old has been an ever-present in the Blues midfield in their quest to end the season in the Premier League top four and win the Europa League having lost to Manchester City in the League Cup final.
Then there is Lloris, who has helped Tottenham Hotspur get on the brink of finishing third in the Premier League and featured prominently in the North London club’s run to a first ever Champions League semi-final appearance.
He is on the list of nominees for the award with Pogba, who is in line for another accolade to his name this season after being named in the PFA Team of the Year. This is despite being criticised regularly in what has been a poor season for the Red Devils.
