Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr faced the cameras shortly after the game to grant an interview at the Stephen Keshi Stadium and he revealed that he was happy that his team beat one of the pre-tournament favourites to win the coming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt.

”It was not a good match but a great match, when you play against such a team like Egypt which is for me one of the favourites for the AFCON and you can win the game, it is a great match for us,” said Rohr. ”All the time we have to improve but let us at first enjoy this wonderful result.”

“They did so well, we scored a wonderful goal so let us enjoy and then we will analyze tomorrow this game and to work on the things we have to make better.”

”What is interesting in Asaba is we had three wonderful victories. The first one against Seychelles, it was very hot, that’s why we played at 6 pm today, it was better for the quality of football for the two teams.”

In like manner, the German coach, Gernot Rohr heaps praise on Paul Onuachu, who took advantage of his first start in the Super Eagles shirt as his sensational strike on his full debut gave the three-time African champions a narrow win over the six-time African champions Egypt on Tuesday evening.

The FC Midtjylland striker opened the scoring less a minute into the game when he rifled home a screamer from the edge of the box, and Rohr admitted that it was the fastest goal he has ever witnessed in his coaching career.

”We scored a goal very early. I think this is the earliest goal I have seen as a coach and it’s coming from the kickoff. It was a planned goal you can say that and it was very nice,” Rohr told reporters. ”We have other profiles for the striker position, we now have this tall guy from Denmark. He did very well but he has to improve still.”

Rohr made five changes to the team that beat Seychelles by naming goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, Leon Balogun, John Ogu, Moses Simon and Paul Onuachu in the starting XI vs Egypt.

”We had five changes in the team, the goalkeepers came in and we finished with two local players that made their debuts. It will be good for them, for their confidence and for the careers of the players.

”I am happy about it also because our 23 players did very well for the past ten days in Asaba,” the German added.

The 1-0 victory was was Nigeria’s first win over Egypt in 29 years.

  1. Kelechi can still be invited if he has started playing week in week out. There should be healthy competition in the team.
