Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Juventus from Real Madrid in the summer, is the Italian League’s top scorer but has been left out of Opta Sports’ Serie A 2018/19 team of the season so far.
The Portugal international has scored 21 times for Juventus since joining from Real Madrid last summer, 19 of which have arrived in league matches. Juventus are currently well on their way to retaining their Serie A title, leading second-placed Napoli by 13 points.
However, Ronaldo has not been included in the Best XI despite being Serie A top goalscorer. Other surprise omissions include Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi and Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly. Icardi’s club captain Samir Handanovic has been selected as goalkeeper in the Serie A XI, which is based solely on Opta data.
The defensive four in a 4-4-2 formation includes Inter’s Milan Skriniar, Lazio’s Francesco Acerbi and Ronaldo’s Juventus team-mates Alex Sandro and Joao Cancelo. The midfield three consists of Juve’s Miralem Pjanic and Napoli duo Allan and Fabian Luiz Pena.
The forward line comprises Alejandro Gomez of Atalanta on the left-wing and Roma’s Stephan El Shaarawy on the right. Meanwhile, AC Milan’s Krzysztof Piatek who has scored 23 goals in all competitions has been preferred to Ronaldo.
