French forward Antoine Griezmann’s heroic second-half cameo was all for nothing as Girona bundled Atletico Madrid out of the Copa del Rey on away goals. Diego Simeone’s men had overturned a 2-1 deficit to lead 3-2 and on their way into the quarter-final stage only for Seydou Doumbia’s decisive touch from Borja Garcia’s 88th-minute effort to silence the Wanda Metropolitano crowd.
Nikola Kalinic had put Atletico in front after just 12 minutes and had a goal disallowed soon after. It was a wake-up call for the visitors as goals either side of half time from Valery Fernandez and reported Barcelona target Christian Stuani put Girona in front an hour into the second leg round of 16 encounter. Griezmann was then brought on two minutes after Stuani’s goal in place of Koke and within five minutes, he had provided the assist for Angel Correa’s leveller.
The French international then seemed to have won the contest for Atletico with his 84th minute goal but there was more drama to come as Doumbia got the all-important equaliser with two minutes of normal time left on the clock. Girona held on to claim a memorable win via away goals and book spot in the last eight; the first time in history Girona would reach that stage of the Copa del Rey.
