VIDEO: VAR humbles Jesus as Spurs shock Man City at Etihad

Manchester Cityto return to the top of the Premier League table after playing 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspurs at the Etihad Satdium. First half strike from Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero was cancelled out by Eric Lamela and second half strike from Lucas Moura. City took the lead through Sterling in the 20 minute but Lamela levelled up three minutes later before Aguero put the Cityzens back in the lead before Moura equalised for the White Lilys in the second half.

Pep Guardiola made four changes to the team that defeated West Ham 5-0 in the first game. John Stones misses out with a thigh injuy and was replaced by Nicolas Otamendi in the back four. Gundogan came into the midfield for David Silva, while Bernardo Silva and Aguero were recalled into the team to oust Mahrez and Jesus in the final third. For Tottenham, Christian Eriksen returned to the starting line-up for Spurs, replacing Lucas Moura in the attacking third of the pitch, despite speculation regarding his future at the club.

After 20 minutes of play the home side take the lead out of nothing as Sterling converts at De Bruyne’s pinpoint delivery into the back of the net. Sterling travels off the back of Walker-Peters and nods his effort across Lloris and into the net. It was a super finish from the forward, as the goal was his fourth of the campaign.

Three minutes after Sterling’s goal, Spurs were back in the contest as Lamela sends a fine finish past Ederson. Lamela was afforded space and time between the City midfield and defence. The Brazilian goalie’s positioning was suspect and allows the Tottenham winger to bend his effort beyond his reach into the back of the net.

City were back in the lead courtesy of Argentine striker Aguero. Patience from the hosts allows them to regain the lead after Bernardo Silva and De Bruyne opened up Spurs down the right flank. The Belgian fires a low ball into the middle where Aguero makes his run across Alderweireld. He clips the ball past Lloris from close range into the left bottom corner.

Manchester City finished the opening half as the better side with Spurs also fighting back but the first half result was fair enough as the Cityzens were the better team.

City began the second half just as they ended the first with so many chances flowing but it was Tottenham who got the first goal in the second 45 minutes. Lucas came off the bench and makes an instant impact with his first touch. He rose above Walker to glance his header from Lamela’s cross over Ederson and into the net as Spurs levelled. Image

City were close to taking the lead back few minutes later but Sterling’s effort was blocked by Alderweireld.

De Bruyne was instrumental for City once again as he led a counterattack but his low pass hits the back of Jesus’ legs when looking for Gundogan.

VAR denied City the death with Jesus believing that he has won the game for the hosts as he curls an effort home following a scramble from the corner. However, he latched on to Laporte’s knockdown, which came off the arm of the defender.

Guardiola and his men will turn attention to their next game against Bournemouth away from home while Tottenham will welcome Newcastle at the White Hart Lane.
