Last year, Davido’s career saw a massive renaissance, following the release of the game-changing, Tekno-produced banger, “If”. Shortly after, he released “Fall”, which definitely cemented the fact that he was on a roll. Now, nearly two years on, these songs are still gaining him accolades, as “Fall” has just become the most viewed Nigerian music video on YouTube, sitting at nearly 98 million views
Davido promised his fans that 2017 will see him go “back to basics” – meaning that he’d be making music primarily for the local market, instead of the international one. Ironically, his international career has seen a massive boom since then, with “Fall” becoming his biggest crossover hit. While it’s not the best song the afropop superstar has released in the past year, “Fall” is certainly a fan favourite, which explains why it’s now surpassed Yemi Alade’s history-making “Johnny” clip as the most viewed Nigerian music video on YouTube (with over 50,000 views and counting).
For a while, it seemed Yemi Alade’s “Johnny” would become the first Nigerian music video to amass 100 million views on YouTube, but at the rate at which the views for “Fall” are rising, it’s pretty clear that Davido will be the first to reach that massive milestone.
