Akin Ogunbiyi, is a vivid description of a man endowed with grace, wisdom and charm. He is an indefatigable and a dogged entrepreneur, an epitome of diligence, hard work, excellence and humility.

Born in the ancient city of Ile-Ogbo, Osun State to a family of peasant farmers, he had his early education at A.U.D Primary School where he had his first experience of life’s woes having to cope with lack and the burden of chasing a dream. A typical village boy who had nothing but his wit, foresight and a big dream burning intensely within, he kept his focus on the goal in sight. He knew that the little village boy was the star that must liberate his people from the obscurity, marginalization, hopelessness and indignation. Like gold in its raw state, he needed to be refined by life’s scourge. He remained resolute on his mission and fought against all odds and setbacks to emerge a colossus to be reckoned with globally.

Like Peter Drucker said, “Knowledge has power. It controls access to opportunity and advancement”, Akin Ogunbiyi’s insatiable quest for knowledge motivated him to proceed to the International Graduate School of Management, University of Navarra (IESE) Barcelona in Spain where he earned an Executive Masters in Business Administration after bagging a degree in Agricultural Economics from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ife. His educational conquest inspired him to further expand his business acumen at Lagos Business School and also earned a degree in History and an M.Sc, in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management from the University of Lagos, UNILAG.

The education stalwart left no stone unturned in his tenacious quest for knowledge that he bagged degrees from the Global Executive Leadership Certificate from Yale School of Management; Certified High Potential Leadership Education from Harvard Business School and a Graduate Advanced Management Leadership Course from Said Business School, University of Oxford.

As a visionary leader and entrepreneur, Ogunbiyi ventured into business at the age of 29 and at age 31, he started Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc, a pan- African organization on 18th April, 1995. The organization has evolved into a conglomerate consisting of nine companies with diverse interests in various sectors of the Nigerian economy through investments, strategic alliances, and partnerships, and with over 3,000 staff and marketing executives in its employment. Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc, currently has an authorized share capital of over N10 billion and transacts both Life and General Insurance Business.

Today, after 27 years in the Insurance industry in Nigeria, Mutual Benefits has become a leading brand in Nigeria with branches in the nooks and crannies of the country and in other African countries, especially in Liberia and Niger Republic.

Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi’s career development in Insurance started during his undergraduate studies when he ventured into Agricultural Insurance as his choice of specialization. Soon after graduation he was employed in 1988 by the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria as a Research & Planning Officer. He trained in insurance at NICON but he gave up an impressive and promising career there to go into Insurance Consultancy, a business unexplored in Nigeria at the time.

He then joined the Finance and Insurance Experts Limited, a multi-disciplinary consultancy firm and became the pioneer Chief Executive/ Managing Partner in 1992.

Akin is an Associate Member of the Chartered Insurance Institute of London and a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Directors; Fellow West Africa Insurance Institute, Banjul, Gambia and also a Fellow of the Risk Managers Society of Nigeria.

As a business icon and manager, he has successfully built businesses from scratch into a conglomerate that have beacon of hope to other aspiring entrepreneurs. As a light sets on hill Ogunbiyi shines so brightly to illuminate the path for others to navigate with ease.

Determined to pursue his dream for the people of Osun state, the billionaire business tycoon whose innate desire is to see Osun state become a pride of the nation, has decided to put his foot forward for the cause he believes in. As a proponent of the “Never give up” maxim, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi is putting his weight behind his people by contesting for the governorship seat in the 2023 elections.

He is poised to make Osun state the food basket of the South West Nigeria and an economic nerve center of the country through direct investment in human and capital development.
