Obadiah Mailafia may have been killed, death should be probed – HURIWA to CAN, SOKAPU

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has called for an investigation into the death of Obadiah Mailaifia, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

HURIWA said Mailafia may have been killed “extralegally,” hence his death should be probed.

The rights group recalled how the former presidential candidate had raised an alarm over threats to life but security agents failed to probe his claim.

HURIWA made the call in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director Miss Zainab Yusuf.

According to HURIWA: “One year ago, precisely on September 11, 2020 at the height of the incessant harassment by the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force, the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and a critic of the current administration Dr Obadiah Mailafiya raised the alarm of death threat as follows: “Please, pray for me. I have reasons to believe that my life is in danger and that some powerful political forces want to silence me forever for speaking the truth. For speaking on behalf of the Holy Martyrs — of thousands of innocent children, women, elderly and youths that have been killed in our beloved country”.

“There are very unassailable reasons to believe that the alarm he raised which was never investigated may be the harbinger of his sudden demise in Abuja on Sunday September 19th 2021, hence the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, which is calling for independent investigation on his death.”

The rights group urged the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union, SOKAPU, to jointly hire “top notch forensic investigation teams to independently probe the immediate and remote circumstances of the death of Obadiah Mailaifia so as to ascertain the exact cause of the death of a man who since the past few Years became the voice of truth against the powers- that -be and the champion of the PRINCIPLE OF RULE OF LAW IN NIGERIA.”

HURIWA regretted that Nigeria seems to have become the killer of her best citizens, adding that “persons who speak truth to power in the past six and half years have come under persistent attacks and pressure from forces embedded within the Nigerian Security Forces and the political class in charge of government at all levels to an extent that even the central ruling party – ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS has gone all out to try to sponsor many toxic, obnoxious and unconstitutional bills all aimed at curtailing the enjoyment of the constitutionally guaranteed fundamental human rights recognised in chapter 4 of the Nigerian constitution.”

How APC used, dumped George Akume – Tiv youths

The Tiv Youth Organization, TYO, Worldwide, on Sunday, said George Akume, the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, has been used and dumped by the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Timothy Hembaor, President General of TYO, was reacting to the decision of the APC in the North Central to pick former Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura as its candidate for the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, ahead of Akume.

Hembaor said Akume got what he deserved for turning his back against the Tiv nation following attacks by armed Fulani herders.

In a statement, the TYO President-General said: “The Fulani hegemony has given its rating and conclusion on what they think about Senator George Akume, that the man cannot be trusted to lead the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The North Central body of the party has decided and put forward Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura, the former governor of Nasarawa state as the favoured candidate for the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress.

“The Tiv nation will not sympathize with Senator Akume! He has only received a befitting reward for betraying his people!

“We don’t have to use a crystal ball to understand that such sensitive party positions are made possible by the leader of the party and it has been proven clearly that a man who easily betrays his own people like Akume has repeatedly done to the Tiv nation cannot be trusted to lead the APC in Nigeria.”

TYO criticized Akume for failing to learn from the late Senator Joseph Tarka who was rejected by the “caliphate” to assume leadership position of Nigeria.

“And it is such a tragic repetitive déjà veux that it throws us back to the NPN days when the NPN refused to back late Senator Joseph Sarwuan Tarka for the position of President. Akume should have learnt from that sad incident, but he didn’t. His own case was even worse because Tarka did not betray Tiv people. In fact, Tarka stood firmly for his people and protected their interest, yet, the Caliphate did not trust him with the leadership of the country.

“George Akume has been used and dumped! Painful but true. But we cautioned him to thread carefully with mortal enemies of his people. Sad that his insatiable appetite for power and more power didn’t let him listen to the voice of reason.

“It would be boring to regurgitate the serial incidents that the Fulani hegemony has put hurdles on the emergence of Tiv leadership in the Nigerian state. And JS Tarka was Akume’s kinsman from Mbakor, Jemgbagh and Tiv. These were all manipulations of the Fulani and it continues to this day,” TYO said.

The group also accused the minister of supporting Fulanis against the Tiv nation.

Hembaor noted that Akume’s fall from grace should serve as a lesson to other Tiv sons and daughters.

Chelsea beat Spurs to extend unbeaten run

Chelsea stretched their unbeaten Premier League run to five games as Thomas Tuchel’s team deservedly beat Tottenham.

After managing no shots on target in the first half, Thomas Tuchel’s side looked like a different team after the break and scored three second-half goals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Blues opened the scoring four minutes after the re-start, when Thiago Silva headed past Hugo Lloris from Marcos Alonso’s corner.

Half-time substitute N’Golo Kante added a second with his first goal in 49 league appearances, though his long-range effort took a massive deflection from Eric Dier.

Antonio Rudiger found the bottom corner in injury time to complete the win.

Spurs started the game brightly and were the better side in the first half, but Nuno Espirito Santo’s side managed just two shots on target throughout and struggled to find a response after going behind.

Silva, Alonso, Rudiger, Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner all came close as the Blues enjoyed eight second-half shots on target, but Lloris made a number of saves to deny them.

Chelsea are one of only three teams yet to lose in the Premier League this season, along with Liverpool and Manchester United.

The victory lifts the Blues to joint top of the table, alongside Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Before the game, tributes were paid to Jimmy Greaves who played for both clubs, after he died aged 81.
